Self-Study Determining a Diagnostic Pathway: The Foundations of Dysphagia Imaging
Patheous Health Imaging and Patheous Health Education officially closes on March 31, 2026. Any learner who satisfactorily completes a self-study course by midnight EST on March 31st, with the intention to earn ASHA CEUs, will be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. It is our understanding that educational content will still be available after March 31st until August 1st. Self-study courses completed after March 31st will not be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. Learners will obtain a certificate of completion verifying the number of Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned. Documentation should be kept and tracked by the learner.

Course Description
This course provides the foundations for clinical decision making when working with patients with dysphagia. This course includes an introduction to dysphagia imaging, presents the benefits of each tool, and offers guidelines for determining which instrumental tool will be most appropriate based on your patient’s clinical presentation and relevant medical history. An overview of analyzing physiological deficits with each exam is described, as well as contraindications for both.

- Describe when each imaging test is appropriate based on clinical presentation
- Outline the differences between FEES and MBSS
- List the contraindications for FEES and MBSS
- Identify anatomy when visualized on a FEES and MBS
- Gain basic knowledge of interpretation of FEES and MBSS
- Describe penetration/aspiration scale
- Determine usage of compensatory strategies
