Course Description

This two-hour live webinar is designed to educate speech-language pathologists on the diagnostic and clinical applications of high-resolution pharyngeal manometry (HRPM) for evaluating dysphagia. The session will review normal and abnormal HRPM studies, explore how HRPM complements other instrumental assessments (e.g., videofluoroscopy), and highlight the clinical utility of topographic pressure plots in therapy planning. New to this updated course is a focused discussion of the findings from the international HRPM Working Group, including recommended core metrics, protocol standardization, and an evolving diagnostic classification framework. Case studies will illustrate practical implementation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the principles of high-resolution pharyngeal manometry (HRPM) and how it differs from esophageal manometry.
  • Identify HRPM pressure-flow patterns that indicate normal vs. disordered pharyngeal swallow physiology.
  • Discuss at least three recommended HRPM metrics from the international working group consensus.
  • Apply HRPM findings in the context of complementary studies such as videofluoroscopy and FEES.
  • Use HRPM data to guide therapeutic decision-making in clinical dysphagia practice.
