Purpose:

This two-hour webinar provides an opportunity to develop an understanding of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and the differences and similarities between LPR and (gastroesophageal reflux disease) GERD. Instruction is provided on accurately utilizing the Reflux Finding Score to identify LPR and making appropriate referrals for diagnosis of LPR. Evaluation and management, including behavioral, naturalistic, medical, and surgical treatment options will be discussed.


Learning Objectives: 

1. Describe the differences between laryngopharyngeal reflux and gastroesophageal reflux. 

2. Accurately utilize the Reflux Finding Scale to evaluate a laryngeal image. 

3. List at least one disorder, other than LPR, that can cause laryngeal inflammation. 

4. Outline the various tests for LPR and determine appropriate referral recommendations. 

5. Describe behavioral, medical, and surgical treatments for LPR.

    Ashli O’Rourke

    Ashli O’Rourke, M.D., MS, joined the MUSC Evelyn Trammell Institute for Voice & Swallowing in September 2012. Dr. O’Rourke began her professional career as a SLP, earning her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Florida State University. After more than seven years of clinical speech therapy practice at Emory University Hospital, she attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and her fellowship in Laryngology – Voice and Swallowing disorders at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. O'Rourke is Professor and Director of Laryngology at the Medical University of South Carolina where she holds the Mark & Evelyn Trammell Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Dysphagia Research Society and the Exam Council for the American Board of Otolaryngology.
