Self-Study: MBSS Foundations - Navigating the Modified Barium Swallow Study

Patheous Health Imaging and Patheous Health Education officially closes on March 31, 2026. Any learner who satisfactorily completes a self-study course by midnight EST on March 31st, with the intention to earn ASHA CEUs, will be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. It is our understanding that educational content will still be available after March 31st until August 1st. Self-study courses completed after March 31st will not be reported to the ASHA CE RegistryLearners will obtain a certificate of completion verifying the number of Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned. Documentation should be kept and tracked by the learner.


Course Description

This course was designed to provide fundamental knowledge for the learners who are either new or returning to completing MBSS. The content includes a three-part video series offering learners the prerequisite knowledge of basic anatomy observed during an MBSS, radiation safety, and a review of supplementary assessment tools that complement the MBSS evaluation.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify basic structures in radiographic image
  2. Describe steps to ensure minimal radiation exposure
  3. Identify scales or survey tools often used in with the MBSS to assess swallow function

Theresa Hopkins-Rossabi is an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Division of SLP. A certified speech-language pathologist and board-certified in swallowing, she has over 35 years of clinician experience primarily in the acute care setting. Dr. Ph.D. research was focused on respiratory-swallow coordination. Mrs. Hopkins-Rossabi receives financial compensation for the completion of this presentation.
