Course Description

This course addresses issues with current dichotomization practices of the swallowing continuum in both diagnostics and intervention and how this negatively impacts patient care. Interrelationships will be described and showcased to help the clinician increase awareness for the importance of evaluating the entire swallow under fluoro and engage multidisciplinary dysphagia team members. Case examples and case studies will be used throughout the presentation.


Learning Outcomes

1. Learner will list three interrelationships between the oropharynx and esophagus

2. Learner will describe the value of videofluoroscopic swallowing studies, standardization practices, and multidisciplinary collaboration in dysphagia diagnostics.

3. Learner will identify rationale for assessing the entire swallowing continuum under fluoroscopy 


Time Ordered Agenda


  • 0-5 minutes: Introduction and disclosures
  • 5-20 minutes: Historical dichotomization
  • 20-45 minutes: The clinical problem 
  • 45-60 minutes: Anatomy and physiology
  • 60-75 minutes: Interrelationships of the oropharynx and esophagus
  • 75-90 minutes: Diagnostic modalities and standardization practices

    Dr. Stephanie Watts

    Dr. Stephanie Watts is a clinician, researcher, and educator specializing in the areas of swallowing and voice assessment and treatment at the University of South Florida (USF). Her research interests include esophageal physiology, cough neurophysiology, clinical evaluation of airway protective behaviors, and maximizing patient health outcomes through multidisciplinary care. She earned an undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology at Florida State University and a master’s degree in Speech Pathology at USF. Dr. Watts earned her doctoral degree at USF under the direction of Dr. Emily Plowman in 2017 and was promoted to faculty in Medicine. She is currently section chief of Speech Pathology at the USF Voice Center within Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery where she conducts research and sees swallowing, voice and upper airway patients clinically in a multidisciplinary clinic.     Jessica Gregor

    Jessica Gregor is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona with expertise in diagnostics and intervention of complex swallowing disorders in adults. She is board-certified through the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Jessica also specializes in prevention, management, and rehabilitation of speech, jaw opening, breathing, and lymphatics in the oncology population, including alaryngeal speech and pulmonary optimization in total laryngectomees. She established the first Multidisciplinary Swallowing Clinic within the Mayo Clinic system with her ENT and GI colleagues for best collaborative care of complex dysphagia cases. Jessica obtained her Bachelor of Science in Speech & Hearing Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008 and her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at Rush University in Chicago, IL in 2010. She is a trainer for the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program as well as a clinical mentor for the Med SLP Ed and associated certification program. Jessica also co-founded Esophageal Co-Lab LLC with her colleague Dr. Stephanie Watts, which is an educational, training, and collaborative endeavor for multidisciplinary dysphagia teams and implementing esophageal screening into clinical practice.
