Self-Study: Get Focused - An Online Advanced FEES Interpretation Workshop (4220)

Patheous Health Imaging and Patheous Health Education officially closes on March 31, 2026. Any learner who satisfactorily completes a self-study course by midnight EST on March 31st, with the intention to earn ASHA CEUs, will be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. It is our understanding that educational content will still be available after March 31st until August 1st. Self-study courses completed after March 31st will not be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. Learners will obtain a certificate of completion verifying the number of Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned. Documentation should be kept and tracked by the learner.


Course Description

This course is for clinicians who have already received FEES Training, as the purpose is to improve clinicians’ interpretation skills. This workshop will review a FEES protocol and discuss implementation of rating scales. There will be exercises to practice verbiage for describing laryngeal abnormalities and interpretation of a variety of swallowing abnormalities. The goal of the course is to improve analysis of FEES exams and documentation of findings. This unique course is taught by skilled FEES clinicians from two different backgrounds, acute care and long term care.


Learning Objectives

  • Accurately identify anatomical variations and determine appropriate referrals
  • Identify normal and abnormal swallowing during FEES, including normal aging variants
  • Implement use of rating scales to improve intra- and inter-rater reliability for FEES
  • Accurately analyze and interpret FEES exams

Selena Reece, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S Selena Reece

Since receiving her Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Selena Reece has worked in acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently serves as the Director of Education for Patheous Health. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and an ACE continuing education award recipient. Selena has lectured on FEES and adult dysphagia throughout the United States, been featured on podcasts, and volunteers on committees for ASHA, the American Board of Swallow and Swallowing Disorders, and Speech Therapy Cambodia. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by board certified Otolaryngologist, Dr. Gregory Postma. Beth Cormell, MS, CCC-SLP Beth Cormell

Beth Cormell, MS, CCC-SLP is an acute care Speech-Language Pathologist at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. She has been an SLP for more than 25 years and specializes in treating medically complex and critically ill patients. Ms. Cormell has also been an educator for over 20 years and specializes in teaching classes in medical Speech Pathology and Fiberoptic Endoscopy Evaluation of Swallowing Beth Cormell has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 25 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and is currently working as a clinical SLP at UNCRex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. She initiated the FEES program at UNCRex in 1997, and since, has completed thousands of FEES. Beth not only trains all UNCRex speech staff on FEES, but has also been instrumental in training clinicians and implementing new FEES programs throughout the country. She has taught FEES courses for more than 18 years, has presented short courses on FEES implementation and application at NCSHLA’s Annual Convention and at the ASHA Convention.
