Self-Study: Introduction to the Total Laryngectomy for the SLP

Patheous Health Imaging and Patheous Health Education officially closes on March 31, 2026. Any learner who satisfactorily completes a self-study course by midnight EST on March 31st, with the intention to earn ASHA CEUs, will be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. It is our understanding that educational content will still be available after March 31st until August 1st. Self-study courses completed after March 31st will not be reported to the ASHA CE RegistryLearners will obtain a certificate of completion verifying the number of Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned. Course Details:

Introduction to the total laryngectomy for the Speech-Language Pathologist is intended for professionals with novice experience with the laryngectomy population. This course will cover fundamental content as it relates to procedures, anatomy and physiology, terminology, care/management regarding voice/ communication restoration and swallowing, identification within the healthcare environment, introduction to laryngectomy specific education, supplies, and devices as well as acute airway management. This course should be utilized as a precursor for more advanced level training.


Learning Objectives:

  • As a result of this activity the participant will be able to understand surgical interventions for laryngeal cancer and identify a total laryngectomee.

  • As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to summarize basic anatomy/physiology and terminology related to the laryngectomy population.

  • As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to identify the changes inrespiration, communication and swallowing within this patient specific population from non-laryngectomized patients.

  • As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to help guide staff education foracute airway management of the laryngectomee.

  • As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of pre-operative education and assessment.

  • As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to explain basic care management of the post-operative and chronic laryngectomee.

  • 0:10-0:30 – Laryngectomy procedure and identification in the healthcare environment
  • 0:30-0:50 – Anatomy, physiology, and terminology.

MEd CCC-SLP Jacob Tabor

Jacob Tabor completed his undergraduate work at the University of Arkansas and subsequently moved to Georgia to complete his masters in Speech-Language Pathology at Georgia State University. Jacob has over 15 years of experience across various healthcare settings including subacute rehabs, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, in-patient rehab units and long-term acute care facilities while spending the majority of his career within the acute care setting including Trauma Centers and Certified Stroke Centers. Over his years he has completed thousands of instrumental assessments (MBSS/FEES) and has worked with hundreds of patients with artificial airways including patients status-post tracheostomy and laryngectomy. He has had the pleasure of serving on the Tracheostomy Team as well a laryngectomy clinician within the acute care setting with his experience including pre-op laryngectomy education, post-op laryngectomy care, TEP management, swallowing evaluations, discharge/family education and electrolarynx training. These opportunities lead to the ability to train fellow clinicians as well as to be able to provide in-services to other healthcare professionals. Jacob currently works as an endoscopist for Patheous Health as well as a Clinical Educator for Passy-Muir Valve where he continues to share his passion and knowledge for patients with artificial airways. Mr. Tabor receives financial compensation for the completion of this presentation.

M.S. CCC-SLP Samone Martin

Samone Martin, M.S. CCC-SLP, is a speech language pathologist within the WellStar Healthcare System with 14 years of acute care and inpatient rehabilitation experience evaluating and treating swallowing and communication disorders. Specializing in neurological disorders, tracheostomy care and head and neck cancer with a focus on the laryngectomy population, Samone attended Tennessee State University and completed her master’s program 2010. This is where she developed her passion for the tracheostomy and laryngectomy populations while interning at The Dept of Veteran Affairs, Nashville. Over the years, Samone’s strengths in collaboration, communication and laryngectomy management have garnered her some recognition within the WellStar Healthcare System for authoring laryngectomy policies and procedures. She has had the opportunity to author and co-author laryngectomy and tracheostomy specific education and training protocols as well as collaborate with EPIC specialists to develop laryngectomy specific documentation for improved patient safety and identification. Ms. Martin receives financial compensation for the completion of this presentation.
