Self-Study - Navigating Swallowing Changes Across Adulthood

Patheous Health Imaging and Patheous Health Education officially closes on March 31, 2026. Any learner who satisfactorily completes a self-study course by midnight EST on March 31st, with the intention to earn ASHA CEUs, will be reported to the ASHA CE Registry. It is our understanding that educational content will still be available after March 31st until August 1st. Self-study courses completed after March 31st will not be reported to the ASHA CE RegistryLearners will obtain a certificate of completion verifying the number of Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned. Documentation should be kept and tracked by the learner.

Course Description:


Healthcare providers caring for adults across the lifespan must understand the age-related changes in swallowing function. Even healthy adults experience swallowing changes; yet when dysphagia occurs, negative health consequences may ensue. In this course, the presenter will: 

  • Provide an overview of normal swallowing function and common age-related swallowing changes
  • Outline how various medical diagnoses and medications may contribute to dysphagia
  • Describe the negative health consequences of dysphagia as well as the impact on quality of life
  • Provide an overview of the benefits and consequences of various dysphagia interventions in the aging population 

Case studies will be provided to enhance learning. 

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe possible age-related swallowing changes
  • Identify options for improving swallow safety and efficiency
  • State the risks/benefits of dysphagia, as well as various dysphagia interventions for the aging population

Selena Reece, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S Selena Reece

Since receiving her Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Selena Reece has worked in acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently serves as the Director of Education for Patheous Health. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and an ACE continuing education award recipient. Selena has lectured on FEES and adult dysphagia throughout the United States, been featured on podcasts, and volunteers on committees for ASHA, the American Board of Swallow and Swallowing Disorders, and Speech Therapy Cambodia. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by board certified Otolaryngologist, Dr. Gregory Postma.
